Fall Foliage Road Trip: Best Weeks to See Peak Color in New England

Autumn leaves graded from green to deep red

Peak color doesn’t hit Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine all at once. It starts in the high elevations of northern Vermont in late September and works its way south and toward the coast over the following three weeks, finishing in places like Bar Harbor in mid-October. Time a road trip to follow that progression and you can chase peak color across all three states instead of guessing at a single week and hoping you got lucky.

Quick facts before you book

Overall window: Late September through mid-October, with the exact peak shifting year to year based on summer drought conditions and early cold snaps.

The pattern: Color moves from north to south and from high elevation to low, with coastal areas peaking last of all.

2026 outlook: Early forecasts point to a slightly later than average season, so if anything, lean toward the back half of the window rather than the front.

The color progression: when to be where

Fog drifting across forested mountains

Last week of September: Higher elevations in northern Vermont and New Hampshire, plus Maine’s Aroostook County and Moosehead Lake region, see color first. First week of October: Central Vermont, the White Mountains, and Maine’s western mountains (Rangeley and Bethel) typically hit their stride. Second week of October: Color reaches Maine’s midcoast, including Camden. Mid-October: Coastal spots like Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park peak last, often as inland areas are already past their best. Pair that stop with our Bar Harbor and Acadia guide.

Stowe, Vermont

Start here in the last week of September or first days of October to catch northern Vermont’s high-elevation color at its best. The drive up Route 108 through Smugglers’ Notch is one of the state’s classic foliage roads. Stay at the Green Mountain Inn in the village for walkable access to shops and restaurants, or if you’d rather be tucked into the hills outside town.

Woodstock, Vermont

Camden, Maine

By the second week of October, color has moved to the midcoast. The a historic stone mansion overlooking the harbor, is one of the town’s best-known stays.

Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, Maine

Save this for last. Coastal Maine peaks after everywhere else on this route, typically in the second and third weeks of October. Book Bar Harbor or nearby Trenton early for a short drive to the park entrance and early-morning access.

Why fall weekends fill up early

Hiker on a trail below open mountains

Inventory is genuinely limited. Most of these towns are built around small inns and B&Bs rather than large hotel chains, so there are simply fewer rooms to go around during the three or four peak weekends of the year. Repeat visitors book a year ahead. Many of these properties see the same guests return every fall, often booking their next year’s stay before they check out. Weekends go first, weekdays hold out longer. If your schedule is flexible, a Tuesday through Thursday stay is far easier to book on short notice than a Friday through Sunday peak weekend.

Bottom line

Pick your window based on how far north or how close to the coast you want to be, book your inns in that order first, and let the driving route fill in around confirmed reservations. Waiting until color reports are all over the news means booking whatever is left, not what’s actually the best fit for your trip.
